JACK THE GARDENER, oblivious to what lay buried underneath, finished laying the patio with Christopher over the next couple of days. The hidden benefit of this horrible affair was that we ended up with some lovely paving outside the guest lounge, and I bought a beautiful set of table and chairs with a parasol from Robert Dyas.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

OCTOBER 2006

Jez Matthews

I woke on the sofa with a sore head, still feeling drunk. It was late afternoon, and Lukas brought me a strong coffee.

“You must stop this too much drinking,” he said. “It’s no healthy.”

I gratefully accepted the coffee. “I don’t know any other way to clear my head of these thoughts.”

“We had do what we did. You know that. It was accident.”

“You should have called an ambulance,” I said. “It was madness not to. What about Kristyna’s mother and her family? They’re going to be asking after her. How are you going to explain that?”

“I think of something.”

“Well, you’d better think fast. I also have another thought for you to digest. What am I going to tell Graham when I speak to him?”

“You tell him she left and move away from Torquay. You say she finished with me. You say I heartbroken.”

“You have this all worked out, don’t you…? How did she find out about us? We were discreet.”

“I tell her.”

“What on earth possessed you to do that?”

“She find text on phone I sent. So I just told truth.”

“That was really careless.”

“Maybe I want her to find it deep down. You no understand. I could no go on living lie like this. Nearly every night she want me. She paw at me in bed. I pretend I have headache. I no want her. I want you.”

“And what do you think is going to happen when Graham moves back permanently from London next week?”

“We can put him down gently.”

“I don’t want to put him down gently. I don’t want to put him down at all. I love him.”

“No, Mr Jez, you love me. You confused.”

Lukas started to nuzzle my neck and ran his hand along my thigh.

“Please, stop.”

“I know you want me. It will all to be okay.”

He pushed me back into the sofa and cupped my face in his hands, pressing his lips against mine.

“I said no.”

He carried on, ignoring my protests. I slapped him across the face, and he immediately backed away.

“Why you do this?”

“Because I’m not a sex toy for you to abuse whenever you’re feeling a bit randy. I told you no.”

“I put you in mood. I love you.”

“Well, I don’t love you. I don’t think I even fancy you anymore.”

“Don’t say that.”

“Lukas,” I said sympathetically. “You are very young. When you get older, you will learn to understand the difference between love and lust. I’m the first man you have slept with. You think you love me, but there are millions of single, attractive gay men who would fall for your Eastern European looks and charm. Men your own age, for a start.”

“I no want anyone else. I only want you.
